Who is required to install an automatic door operator in Florida?

Under the ADA and the Florida Building Code, any place of public accommodation, commercial facility, or state/local government building must provide accessible entrances. If a manual door creates a barrier for people with disabilities, an automatic door operator may be required to achieve ADA compliance.

What types of businesses must comply with ADA door accessibility requirements in Florida?

Any business open to the public is considered a place of public accommodation under the ADA. This includes retail stores, restaurants, hotels, medical offices, banks, gyms, theaters, schools, and more. These businesses must ensure their entrances are accessible, which often requires automatic door operators.

Are existing buildings in Florida required to install automatic door operators?

Yes. For existing buildings, the ADA requires readily achievable barrier removal. If installing an automatic door operator is technically and financially feasible, it is considered a required accommodation. New construction and renovations have stricter standards and must fully comply with ADA accessibility guidelines.

Can a business be fined for not having an accessible door in Florida?

Yes. Businesses found to be in violation of the ADA can face civil penalties up to $75,000 for a first violation and $150,000 for subsequent violations. Florida has a high volume of ADA-related litigation, making early compliance especially important.

Knox Box systems are approved by fire departments across Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties because they give arriving crews immediate, non-destructive access to your property. Our local technicians understand how South Florida commercial construction actually works — concrete block and stucco walls, impact-rated storefront glazing, salt-air corrosion, and gated communities with hurricane-rated perimeter fencing. We mount every box at compliance height, seal it against coastal weather, and coordinate the paperwork your fire marshal requires, so your building passes inspection the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Knox Box Rapid Entry Systems

Common questions about response times, compatibility, and code compliance in South Florida.

How fast can you install a Knox Box in South Florida?

Most Knox Box installations are completed within 24 to 48 hours of approval across Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. If you have a failed inspection, an insurance deadline, or a certificate of occupancy pending, call (954) 414-7078 and we will prioritize a same-day or next-day dispatch with a state-licensed technician.

Will a Knox Box work with my existing commercial doors and gate operators?

Yes. Knox Box rapid entry systems are designed to work alongside the doors and gates you already have. We place the box so responding crews can reach master keys, gate operator keys, elevator controls, and riser room access — and we can tie the same key set into existing access control, intercom, and keypad systems. We survey your existing hardware before mounting anything.

Does a Knox Box satisfy Florida fire code requirements?

Knox Box systems are the most widely recognized rapid-entry solution for Florida fire code and fire marshal access requirements, and they are commonly required for commercial occupancies, gated communities, and any property with locked perimeter access. Requirements vary by municipality across the Tri-County area, so we verify your specific jurisdiction's specification and submit the required documentation with your application.
