Question 1

Who is required to install an automatic door operator in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Under the ADA and the Florida Building Code, any place of public accommodation, commercial facility, or state/local government building must provide accessible entrances. If a manual door creates a barrier for people with disabilities, an automatic door operator may be required to achieve ADA compliance.

Question 2

What types of businesses must comply with ADA door accessibility requirements in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Any business open to the public is considered a place of public accommodation under the ADA. This includes retail stores, restaurants, hotels, medical offices, banks, gyms, theaters, schools, and more. These businesses must ensure their entrances are accessible, which often requires automatic door operators.

Question 3

Are existing buildings in Florida required to install automatic door operators?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For existing buildings, the ADA requires readily achievable barrier removal. If installing an automatic door operator is technically and financially feasible, it is considered a required accommodation. New construction and renovations have stricter standards and must fully comply with ADA accessibility guidelines.

Question 4

Can a business be fined for not having an accessible door in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Businesses found to be in violation of the ADA can face civil penalties up to $75,000 for a first violation and $150,000 for subsequent violations. Florida has a high volume of ADA-related litigation, making early compliance especially important.
